DERIS Achieves Outstanding Success in Anti-Piracy Efforts in 2024
12 February 2025
In 2024, DERIS had an exceptionally successful year in the fight against piracy. Through more than 15 cases, the firm implemented multi-layered and complex strategies to protect the copyright of the Fortune 500 companies, industry-leading film and production companies, and the world's leading online antipiracy organisation with more than 50 media and entertainment companies. These efforts targeted a wide range of infringers, including illegal streaming platforms, hackers responsible for unauthorized leaks, and developers of technical tools enabling piracy.
In 2024, DERIS’s anti-piracy efforts spanned a vast geographic scope. Within just one year, the firm successfully led legal and criminal proceedings in nine different cities across four regions, effectively tackling copyright infringements. Through meticulous investigations conducted across the country, DERIS identified the sources of piracy, strengthening its role in the ongoing fight against digital copyright infringement.
In 2024, the focus of legal and criminal proceedings was on over 20 illegal streaming websites and platforms involved in illegally distributing over 4,000 pirated movies and 65,000 TV series, including some of the world's most popular content. Additionally, more than five social media accounts and groups, with a combined following of over 15,000, were targeted for their role in leaking multi-million-dollar productions before their official release dates. These accounts were also involved in hacking the systems containing these high-value productions and selling access to them.
As part of the successful criminal proceedings, extensive raid operations were carried out against hackers leaking copyrighted contents and the operators of illegal streaming platforms. Within just four months, a total of 18 electronic devices, including phones, computers, and portable storage units—considered key evidence in the cases—, were seized as a result of these operations.
In one of the landmark cases, a major illegal streaming network, offering a vast library of over 3,111 movies and 1,205 TV series titles, all freely accessible in Turkish, has been completely taken down. The platform attracted over 28 million global visits per month and generated an annual revenue exceeding $40,000. This platform was among Turkey’s most beloved and popular anime streaming sites, and its shutdown sparked widespread reactions in the media and the anime community. The takedown marks a significant victory in the fight against piracy, demonstrating the growing impact of legal enforcement efforts of DERIS.
In another important successful case, by utilizing both legal tools and a successful settlement process, DERIS successfully disrupted a hacker with over 10,000 followers across five accounts, who was illegally distributing copyrighted content. The hacker also possessed over 100 stolen accounts from entertainment companies. As part of this operation, DERIS prevented the leak of a highly anticipated production, expected to generate $891 million in revenue for the involved film studio, by stopping the release of the film before its official launch date. All accounts were shut down, effectively ending their piracy activities.
These landmark actions taken by DERIS in 2024 have not only significantly disrupted piracy networks but also sent a strong message to the digital piracy ecosystem and contributed to the strategy and actions of clients internationally. By targeting key infringers across multiple platforms, conducting extensive raids, and preventing the leakage of high-value productions, DERIS has played a pivotal role in protecting intellectual property rights both on a global and local scale. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, DERIS remains at the forefront of safeguarding the future of entertainment and media industries worldwide.
